Gunnie's Last Round by Lorie Brink

Set in the 1970s in Australia, an orphan named after the father he never met is on a quest to scatter his parents' ashes when he inadvertently opens up old wounds. 

He learns more about the man's life through a shellshocked, mentally confused war veteran bearing a grudge. Together they resolve the troubled past and ultimately lay several ghosts to rest.

If history cannot teach the living a lesson, nothing will.
